2021.11.29 17:11 aldann2 [Question] B.S In Statistics, Unsure about finding a job Post-Grad
I am a third year undergrad student majoring in statistics. What made me switch my major from psychology to statistics was the first stats course I took, in which I received an A. I had always hated math but upon taking my first stats class I fell in love with how it worked and ended up being pretty good at it. Since I just recently switched my major, I’m currently taking classes in SAS and some R courses in upcoming semesters which I’m hopeful will prepare me for an internship or entry level data position. I’m also aware that presenting projects on your resume and making a github page makes all the difference when it comes to finding jobs. I have yet to do this but it is on of my top priorities to create some data visualization projects before I graduate to show potential employers. However, I’m getting a little anxious about the prospective of applying to jobs after undergrad. I am definitely expecting to get a master’s a few years after graduating with my bachelor’s, and the reason for waiting a few years is I would have to save up the funds to pay for grad school on my own while also paying for rent, cost of living, undergrad student loans etc. My ultimate career goal is a senior data scientist position, but I’m afraid that I won’t be able to get any entry level data scientist positions just with my bachelor’s fresh out of undergrad. However, I’m aware how competitive these positions are and I doubt my B.S will even compare to the Master’s students who are applying to the same jobs. I am also very fond of biostatistics and would want to pursue that as well but I found the master’s/entry level requirement to be an issue there as well. Does anyone have any advice as far as what I should do during the year I have left of undergrad to prepare for a DS position, or any advice as far as how to approach jobs post undergrad? I guess I’m just feeling a little lost and would like some guidance, I go to a state school so my statistics major counselor isn’t the best. Thanks all!

2021.11.29 17:11 AETGen Is RocketPool Testnet still running?
I am going through the process of setting up a Rocket pool node and figured that I should run on the testnet first before committing funds so I understand what I am doing.
This has not been a smooth or simple process. For example, Metamask changed and no longer has an Add Token button, like all the documentation on multiple web sites shows - you import a token and you MUST have an address of the token you are trying to import.
and of course I can't install software in Ubuntu because the 20.4 LTS release is broken and I have yet to get that part removed and reinstalled and working.
Right now I am stuck trying to get into Discord. I click on the link in the Rocket pool docs, get a discord user set up, but then the rocket pool section disappears pretty quickly, before I have a chance to figure out where the "TESTNET" group is, much less get into the #faucet channel and find this bot thing.
So is this TESTNET discord thing still active?

I don’t think I’ve gone this long without drinking since high school. I feel so much more clear headed, I’m learning how to manage my anxiety and live life sober! AA meetings have been incredibly helpful. They keep me in check, get me out of the house and out of my head. I plan to keep this going. Staying strong!

2021.11.29 17:11 ebenezerlepage "Walk a few yards from the front door of Mitch Landrieu’s Uptown home, and you’ll find a jumble of uneven concrete and a maintenance hole jutting from the street intersection."
Yellow excavators and road closure signs squat nearby. A few miles away, the Carrollton Water Plant hums with huge emergency generators backing up the enfeebled turbines that power century-old pumps.
If there's any place that encapsulates the public works deficiencies of the United States, it's New Orleans, where Landrieu, who was tapped Nov. 14 to serve as President Joe Biden's infrastructure czar, served two terms as mayor.
When Landrieu was chosen for the job, the White House praised him for restarting the city's recovery from Hurricane Katrina with the "fast-tracking of over 100 projects," and for "turning New Orleans into one of America's great comeback stories."
Landrieu's legacy is more complicated, however. His supporters can point to a new airport terminal, successful negotiations for billions of federal dollars and renovated recreation centers, theaters, hospitals and other public works projects that demonstrate his ability to think big and “get things done.” His critics keep an equally long list of projects that took too long, deals that sputtered, potholes that went unfilled and parts of the city’s infrastructure, like the Sewerage & Water Board, that failed on his watch.
But as he begins the job of overseeing the Biden administration's $1.2 trillion infrastructure program, people who have followed his career said that both the successes and shortcomings of his time in the mayor's office are likely to inform his work on the biggest federal investment in public works in decades.

"Building cities and running construction projects in cities - particularly historic ones - in the age of climate change is a herculean challenge," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell's infrastructure chief, Ramsey Green, who has not been coy in the past about frustration with the state of projects when he took over. "Having someone like Mitch Landrieu, who has been a part of positive victories like constructing the airport and the Saenger Theatre and all sorts of other things in the city, and the challenges of them like the Sewerage & Water Board, will be an asset to the Biden administration in ways they probably don’t understand yet."
Landrieu took office in 2010 after the recovery from Katrina had stalled under Mayor Ray Nagin. At the time, thousands of properties were still in disrepair and some streets were so mangled as to be almost unpassable. Publicly owned buildings and infrastructure remained damaged, parks and public spaces needed to be refurbished and hundreds of millions of dollars had gone unspent. Also, the municipal government was broke.
Andy Kopplin, Landrieu’s chief administrative officer during most of the Landrieu administration, can tick off the list of accomplishments in the early years:
At the same time, Landrieu was trying to pull City Hall out of a $100 million budget hole, find a developer for the abandoned Six Flags site in New Orleans East and begin negotiations in what would become a yearslong fight for billions of dollars in FEMA money to repair the streets.
$200 million spent to rebuild parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and libraries Construction of Crescent Park along the Mississippi River New libraries The reopening of Joe W. Brown Park.
